Mars
The red planet
Summary
Mars is known as the "Red Planet" because of its colour, which comes from iron oxide (rust) on its surface. It is the first planet humanity is seriously thinking of settling.
In depth
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and home to Olympus Mons (about 22 km high), the tallest mountain in the Solar System. It has two small moons: Phobos and Deimos. Its atmosphere is very thin and is 95% carbon dioxide. Its surface holds frozen water and dry ice. Many spacecraft are exploring its surface.
