The Moon
Earth's only natural satellite
Summary
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the brightest object in the night sky. The craters on its surface were left by meteorites striking it over billions of years.
In depth
The Moon is thought to have formed about 4.5 billion years ago, when a Mars-sized body crashed into the young Earth. It always shows us the same face, because the time it takes to spin once on its axis equals the time it takes to orbit the Earth (about 27.3 days). The Moon's gravity is the main cause of the ocean tides.
