Animal Cell
The building block of life
Summary
The animal cell is the basic unit of structure of animal organisms. Unlike a plant cell, it has no cell wall and no chloroplasts.
In depth
Animal cells are eukaryotic cells, meaning their genetic material sits inside a nucleus surrounded by a membrane. The cytoplasm contains organelles such as mitochondria (energy production), ribosomes (protein synthesis), the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. The cell membrane selectively controls what passes into and out of the cell.
