Rexy: The T. rex of Jurassic Park
The most famous dinosaur character in film history
Summary
Rexy is the T. rex character made famous worldwide by Steven Spielberg's 1993 film Jurassic Park. The film changed everything about how dinosaurs were shown on screen; the golden age of CGI began with it.
In depth
The T. rex in Jurassic Park was the star of visual effects that were revolutionary for their time. On set, the filmmakers used Stan Winston's full-scale animatronic T. rex (about 6 metres tall, 12 metres long and around 4 tonnes), while in wider shots the CGI version made by the computer graphics team at Industrial Light & Magic appeared. The film won the Oscar for best visual effects at the 1994 Academy Awards and hugely increased public interest in dinosaur research.
