White Blood Cell
The body's defence force
Summary
White blood cells (leukocytes) are the main cells of the immune system. They detect and destroy germs, viruses and harmful foreign substances that enter the body.
In depth
White blood cells are made in the bone marrow and carried throughout the body by the blood and lymph. There are several types: neutrophils destroy bacteria by phagocytosis (engulfing them), while lymphocytes (B and T cells) take part in the specific immune response; B cells produce antibodies and T cells recognise and destroy infected cells. A microlitre of blood contains about 4,000–11,000 white blood cells, and this number rises quickly during an infection.
