Adrenaline (Epinephrine)
Fight or flight!
Summary
Adrenaline is a hormone released by our adrenal glands when we are excited, frightened or in danger. It speeds up our heartbeat and gives us a momentary burst of extra strength.
In depth
Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone and neurotransmitter that activates the sympathetic nervous system. When it enters the blood it increases the output of the heart, widens the airways in the lungs and raises blood sugar to give the muscles emergency energy. It is the key driver of the evolutionary "fight-or-flight" response in humans.
