Cholesterol
A lipid essential for life
Summary
Because cholesterol is usually mentioned alongside heart disease, it has a reputation as a "bad" substance. In fact it is a vital kind of fat that strengthens the walls of our cells and is used to make many important hormones.
In depth
Cholesterol is a sterol (lipid) molecule found in the membranes of all animal cells, where it helps maintain the cell's structural integrity and fluidity. Most of the cholesterol in the body is not taken in from food but made directly in the liver. It is an essential starting material for making bile acids, vitamin D and the steroid hormones (cortisol, testosterone, oestrogen).
