Cortisol
The stress hormone
Summary
Cortisol is a hormone our body releases when we experience physical or psychological stress (exam stress, work stress and so on). It raises blood sugar to prepare us for difficult situations.
In depth
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone made by the adrenal glands (in the adrenal cortex). It is at the centre of the body's response to stress. When needed, it regulates metabolism, reduces inflammation and keeps us alert. But when it stays high under the constant, chronic stress of modern life, it suppresses the immune system and harms the body.
