Oxytocin
The hormone of love and bonding
Summary
Oxytocin is a remarkable hormone released when we hug someone we love, helping to bond us to one another. It underlies maternal instincts and social bonding.
In depth
Oxytocin is a neuropeptide hormone made of nine amino acids, produced in the hypothalamus and released from the pituitary gland. It plays a key role in behaviours such as social bonding, trust, empathy and attachment. During birth it triggers the contractions of the womb, and during breastfeeding it releases milk, helping to build the deep bond of affection between mother and baby.
