Penicillin
The accident that changed the world
Summary
Penicillin, discovered entirely by chance by Alexander Fleming in his laboratory, was the first antibiotic, and by curing infections it has saved millions of lives.
In depth
Penicillin is an antibiotic from the beta-lactam group, obtained from a mould called Penicillium. It stops bacteria from multiplying and surviving by blocking the synthesis of their cell walls. This lucky discovery in 1928 revolutionised modern medicine, making it possible to treat simple infections that had once been deadly, and lengthening human lives.
