Serotonin
The "happiness molecule"
Summary
Serotonin is an important chemical messenger found in our brain and gut that helps regulate our mood. It is popularly known as the "happiness hormone".
In depth
Serotonin, known chemically as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a monoamine neurotransmitter made from tryptophan, an essential amino acid. About 90% of the body's serotonin is produced in the gastrointestinal (digestive) system. It plays a key role in regulating mood, appetite, sleep, learning and memory. Changes in the serotonin system have long been linked with depression and anxiety, though scientists now see the picture as more complex than a simple "shortage".
